COP27 - Earth Matters' Insights

Tanzeed Alam of Earth Matters Consulting at COP27

With COP27 well underway in Egypt, the big discussions so far are largely around adaptation and finance, in particular funding for loss and damage. Developing countries are already feeling the devastating effects of climate change, and suffering huge financial losses, with floods, droughts and storms becoming more damaging and frequent as time goes on.

Earth Matters Consulting is attending COP27, working closely with colleagues from the UAE delegation as it prepares to host COP28 in Dubai.

Resilience and adaptation to climate change has been a hot topic in the last few days, and one that is high on the agenda for COP28. To help with the urgent support needed by countries already in the midst of climate crisis, the COP27 Presidency and the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions have launched the Sharm-El-Sheikh Adaptation Agenda – a shared agenda to rally global action around 30 adaptation outcomes that are needed to achieve a resilient world by 2030.

It’s clear that adaptation and resilience are being placed at the heart of COP27 - an enhanced global action plan is a priority that will keep negotiators wrangling until the final moments. 10th November was the day of adaptation and resilience at COP27 with many inspiring events occurring throughout the day. One thing that stood out for us was an inspirational address given by Emtithal (Emi) Mahmoud, Poet, Activist, Founder and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador – listen for yourselves from 56 minutes onwards on this link: https://unfccc-events.azureedge.net/COP27_87900/agenda

In the weeks preceding COP27, we took a close look at the progress of climate action in the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), including climate challenges, implementation gaps and practical solutions for climate change adaptation going forward. While the GCC countries have committed to cleaner energy sources and net zero 2050, their climate mitigation and adaptation commitments, without hydrocarbons, remains to be seen. Take a look at our latest Insight piece ‘Climate Change Adaptation in the GCC’ published by The Middle East Institute here:

Insight 285: Climate Change Adaptation in the GCC

With thanks to the Middle East Institute-NUS for publishing this series of insights: https://mei.nus.edu.sg/publication/insight-285-climate-change-adaptation-in-the-gcc/

Our insights were also shared by Tanzeed Alam at a webinar held on 26th October examining the current state of climate action and implementation gaps in the Middle East:

The location of COP27, and COP28, allows Egypt and the wider Middle East region (among the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change) to express their concerns, specific challenges, and unique circumstances. Earth Matters are attending COP27 this year to gain a meaningful insight into the next steps on the road to COP28 – look out for further updates!
